The thesis aims to define the current state and prospects of the available circular economy education in higher and further education. The purpose of the thesis is to create development proposals for circular economy education planning. The study was carried out to support the business of Gaia Consulting, a company focusing on sustainability consulting. The theoretical part of the thesis reviews various interpretations of the term circular economy and its goals and effects. The enablers and drivers that shape circular economy education and circular economy in society are also presented. The chosen research method was qualitative, and the data were collected using semi-structured interviews and the desk research method. The data acquisition started with an online background study on circular economy education. Information was also gathered by interviewing circular economy education and RDI specialists from different universities of applied sciences, universities, Sykli Environmental School of Finland, and the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra. The focus of the interviews was on education enablers, barriers, actors, motivators, and prospects. A content analysis method was chosen to analyse the data. The result of the thesis was a description of the findability of the circular economy education, the factors affecting the organising of education and the prospects of education, as well as development proposals for the education planning. The development of circular economy education needs to be founded on the motivation and needs of students, the needs of working life and the demand for circular economy talent, as well as the internal factors of educational organisations, such as management support and guidance, the motivation of education planners and sufficient resources. The circular economy education supply should be reviewed regularly to ensure that the educational content meets the demands of the students and builds on the previous circular economy education they have received. The results can be utilised in the circular economy education and business cooperation planning, considering other societal issues that affect education, such as societal decision-making and the funding of educational organisations. In future research, it would be advisable to learn more about students' motives for applying to study circular economy and to develop new ways to enhance cooperation between educational organisations and working life. Further research is also needed within educational organisations to distinguish the challenges and opportunities of organising education to allocate their resources correctly....

This thesis is a case study. It describes the development project of the key partnership concept for Laurea Circular Economy Living Lab, which is used to support the circular transformation of the key partners. The objective of this case study, was to discover the drivers and challenges of circular economy transformation and the best ways to support an organisation in its circular transformation within the living lab environment. This case study was commissioned by Laurea University of Applied Sciences. The theoretical framework of this study was compiled by studying the concepts of circular economy, circular transfromation, circular business models, drivers and challenges of circular economy and the living lab. The theory investigated was chosen mainly from fresh, peer-reviewed research articles. The development task was carried out by three students of Laurea University of Applied Sciences and four key partners of Laurea in the ways of co-development and the Double Diamond framework of service design. Two other organisations were also interviewed. In the first phase, “Discover”, students defined the problem and objects of the development task. It also included gathering the backround framework of the related theory. The second phase, “Define”, the research group gathered customer insight by interviewing the organisations and analysing their answers. The “Develop” phase was implemented as a co-creation workshop with the key partners. It was held to identify the services Laurea could offer in its Circular Living Lab in order to help the circular transformation of the key partner organisations. The last “Define” phase included developing the final concept and publishing it. The concept that was created as a result of the co-creation development process, included services and methods that Laurea can use in supporting the key partners in their transformation process within the living lab environment. The main focus points of the consept were solutions to gaining more knowledge about circular economy, finding networks, and research and development for identifying circular possibilities. The result of the development task, the key partner concept, corresponded well with the needs of Laurea. The concrete services and methods listed in the concept design are in line with the findings made from the theory and interviews about what kind of support different organisations could need in their transfromation process, which means that one can find the research reliable and useful. The results of the development process show, that organisations could benefit from many types of support in their circular transformation, and that a living lab run by an academy is able to provide a network or services that will help find solutions to different transformation challenges. If further research were to be done on the matter, it would be beneficial to discover more closely the needs of an organisation in a certain phase of circular transformation. Keywords: circular economy, circular transformation, circular business models, living lab...
